What is a pneumatic trap door opener?
A pneumatic trap door opener works through a technique that uses compressed gasses to get systems moving. Often this is ‘just’ air. Then why the complicated name? “Pneuma” is the Greek word for ‘breath’ or ‘wind’. In practice, it is therefore often referred to as compressed air or compressed air technology.
Pneumatics are used, among other things, for opening and closing doors in, for example, buses and trains. When the doors are moved, a hissing sound is released. This indicates the use of a pneumatic trap door opener. It is also often used in the process industry. Machine lines often have several valves (and counters) that are set in motion by means of compressed air.
Advantages and disadvantages of pneumatics
Like any other tool, a pneumatic trap door opener has advantages and disadvantages. The great advantage of using pneumatics as a drive technology is the low cost price. The purchase costs as well as the installation costs are not very high. In addition, it is a reliable system that can be easily controlled. Also, compressed air is easy to store. Such a system is very flexible and can be constructed and applied in various ways. And air pressure is not polluting, making it suitable for use in the food sector. So, good for people and the environment.
A disadvantage of using a pneumatic trap door opener can be the hissing sound when in use. The hissing sound is caused by the loss of air pressure through the valves. And although the purchase and installation costs are relatively low, the energy costs are often high since the compressors use a lot of energy to create the desired air pressure. In addition, there is a risk that the hoses will leak.
