A clean cap consists of an aluminum slide that fits precisely over the piston rod. It must be slid all the way to the gas spring housing with the flat side against the housing. The rubber cap must then be slid over it to hold this aluminum plate in place. Because the aluminum plate fits precisely over the piston rod, it will scrape the rod clean as the rod is retracted. That is why the clean cap is also called a scraper.
